Legal eagles (or, how not to get sued as an author).
There’s an interesting audio podcast over here where the attorney David Burgess chats with thriller writer Mark Dawson about the topic of “Legal Hazards for Authors and How to Avoid Them.”
This is more how to avoid getting sued by the kind of people who tend to come after famous and wealthy authors with spurious claims – usually along the lines of, “Hey, you’ve got robots in your book – me too – so you must have stolen my plot by sucking my thoughts out of my head during the nights I wasn’t sleeping in my lead-lined-alien-safe-room.”
One legal issue they don’t cover in this chat is avoiding the really bad contracts that many publishers and agents try and get their authors to sign. Oh well, a topic for another day?
