Meet The Martian . . . author Andy Weir.
Every now and then you get a new author ‘breaking out’ – which basically means they become the hot new thing for a while. JK Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins – they all go from the author you’ve never heard of to the author everyone is talking about.
That mantle seems to now being passed to Andy Weir, and his story is quite fascinating. There’s a new podcast where Andy is interviewed by self-help writer James Altucher about how he became a best-selling author with ‘The Martian’ (soon to be a new Ridley Scott film).
Have a listen to the rather interesting interview over here.
One thing I would say, his story is what’s called an outlier. Which is a nice way of saying it’s a bit of a fluke. For every Andy Weir there’s a hundred thousand similar tales where the budding author never broke out and made it big. It’s just you never get to hear those stories, because journalists as a rule like success stories when they’re looking at writers.
