Novelist Donal Ryan is the latest well-known author forced to seek an income outside books, as children’s writers complain that stars from other media monopolise advances, says the Guardian newspaper, highlighting the fact that while celebrity books boom, professional authors are being driven out of full-time work.

In a similar vein, the Irish Times newspaper recently featured the revelation that one of Ireland’s most successful writers had to go back to his old civil service job to earn a living, highlighting the precarious nature of a writing career.
